Happy Birthday

Hi, Margaret –

Mary just called and told me you still haven’t received your birthday
present!  It was mailed (USPS Parcel Post) on November 6th, and they
told me it should be delivered in four days.

Does your complex have a parcel room that it might have been delivered
to and be moldering in?  I don’t know if it will do any good, but you
might inquire of your local post office.  They might have attempted
delivery and failed and then fumbled the notice to you.

I telephoned USPS.  They say they have no ability to trace shipments and
that we must wait 30 days from the date of shipment to file any claim.
Fortunately, I did insure it (# VV003186281US).

Slow animation driving me crazy!

Has anyone figured out a way of disabling the slow animation in Windows?
I am referring to the animation when moving a window, or when clicking
in the scroll bar area (not the scroll bar button), or when expanding or
collapsing directories in explorer.

The animation of windows is really annoying, as it attempts to mimick
your mouse speed, which completely throws me off as I don’t have the
visual que of where the window is.

The only way of disabling the window animation is to uncheck the "show
window contents while dragging" option in the Plus! settings tab of the
Display Properties. But I like showing window contents while I drag, and
this doesn’t disable the other animations.

This appears to be related to IE, but I am uncertain.

Problem making a CD-R

Over the weekend I tried to create a CDR using my Mitsumi drive
with Adaptec SW.

It took a few passes before I was able to find some media that was
acceptable to the drive but after overcoming that I was able to
format the media and the process of copying files to the drive began
normally. Once I was done the software asked if I wanted to make the
media readable by other CD drives and I of course answered yes. The
process of organizing those files seemed to progress normally except at
the end I got a message saying that the data would not be readable, and
it wasn’t.

I tried three times with the same result, even tried a different vendor’s
media.

This has worked in the past. What did I do wrong?

Win98 FE Upgrade Blocked

Question – I am trying to update my Toshiba Tecra 8000 from Win98 FE to
Win98 SE so I can get better USB support.  The problem is that my company
has put some sort of block up upgrading or even installing a fix to
Win98.  Can anyone direct me on how to overcome this complication?

TIA,
Mike

Is it possible to prevent memory swaps?

Hi.

I am trying to prove that an application which I am testing is leaking
memory. So, I have a memory monitor on the screen and I play with the app,
repeating a certain sequence of operations again and again, and watching for
memory drops.

The problem with Windows is that it handles memory very unpredictably. After
repeating the sequence of operations, say, 10 times, all of a suddon Windows
swaps something out – and you have more memory free than you started out
with. Interesting.

Is there a way to prevent swaps or measure the real amount of memory used
globally? I need a way to make Windows reveal memory leaks instead of
covering up for them. Is there maybe some registry setting to change that can
make memory leaks surface easily? Even if it means that the system will have
to be rebooted every 15 minutes.

Thanks
