Have some errors on Windows 98 O/S

Hi, Friends, Merry Chrismas to All!!
I’m expieriencing a problem with my progams in Win98, first of all when I
start windows98 every thing boots O.K but when my desktop appears I see
that on my start task bar I get two or three program blocks, or bars that
have no tiles or program names in these bars and I often get program
errors when starting a program,this sometimes doesn’t occur until I open a
program or connect to the internet. I tried reinstalling windows98 but ths
doesn’t solve my problem, also tried uninstalling every program but
without sucess in correcting this problem. someone suggested I had a
configuration error on windows ,but I don’t know how to resolve this. If
any one has seen this before, and would be willing to help me I would
gladly apreciate it with all my heart. Please get back to me, and request
any further info. if necessary, also if you may have a solution on hand I
will be willing to consider it.

Thank You So Very Much In Advance!!!           J.B.C    (Happy 2001)

Thank you very much

Going From Win95 To What?

I have a P133 class system that has a 200MHz overdrive CPU in it, 96MB,
Win95.  Overall
the system suits me fine for the web surfing and lite computing tasks we use
it for.  Lately its been acting
a bit flakey and I think its time to get off Win95.

Should I go to Win98 or WinME?  I’m a little concerned the hardware is too
lite for ME.  MS says
P150 minimum CPU.

Can anyone comment on how much horsepower ME needs relative to Win98?

Thanks.

Using Japanese on (English) Win2000

Hi, I’m buying a new PC this holiday season and need to
decide which pre-installed OS I should choose – Win98 or
2000.

I use my machine for work, translating and localiziing
software from English to Japanese.  My current machine has
both English and Japanese OS environments (separate
partitions), but I have read that Win2K is multi-lingual and
you can set up a complete Japanese environment on English
Win2K.  I would like any information regarding whether this
setup (Japanese environment on English Win2K) is any
different from Japanese Win2K, especially regarding FEP
(IME)’s kanji henkan and dictionary functions, and file
format compatilibity on .doc, .rtf, .fm, and Trados
formats.  Basically if the files are exportable to and
importable from Japanese Win98/95, there should be no
problem.  I don’t midn if the help and error messages come
up on the screen in English, but need the document files to
be completely localized (in Japanese).

Microsoft doesn’t have much information on this new
multi-lingual feature on their site, so I am seeking help
from my fellow users.  Can anyboday help?  Any information
or lead would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you very much
in advance.

IBM announces new RAM chip technology

Your computer currently relies on several different types of RAM
technology – dynamic RAM for general operation, static RAM for the
processor cache, ‘flash’ RAM for non-volatile storage and so on. Each is
chosen for its particular strengths, but wouldn’t it be nice if we only
had to use one type of memory chip for everything?

It may be closer than you think.

On December 7, IBM and miniaturisation wizards Infineon AG announced
that they will be working together to have MRAM technology available for
market by 2004.

For the curious, the ‘M’ in MRAM stands for magnetic, and stems from the
use of an IBM invention called the magnetic tunnel junction, first
worked with in 1974 and what led to the development of the first "bubble
memory" chips in the late 70′s.

So what’s so special about MRAM? Non-volative, high-speed, high-density
RAM chips is what it means. Imagine a 128 MB RAM DIMM that (a) is no
larger than a standard dynamic RAM DIMM, (b) is completely non-volative,
in that it retains its data when power is removed, and (c) it operates
at static (processor cache) RAM speeds, 500 MHz and higher – four times
that of today’s fastest DRAM – yet consumes a tenth of the power.

Basing today’s PC technology around MRAM instead of DRAM would speed up
the average computer by a factor of five – at least. Add enough MRAM
chips and you can do away with that slow, noisy mechanical storage
device, the humble hard drive, and speed up the computer even more
dramatically.

Hmm, soon it’ll be time to sell those shares in Maxtor …

EXPLORER error won't let Windows boot

Hi. This morning I attempted to boot Windows as usual, when I received the
following error message:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor."

And when I pressed detail, I got:

Win 2000

Hello,

I have installed MS office 2000 on a workstation with Win 2000
(ran update from 10/7) but only the administrator can run the software.
The error I get is: 1706 No valid source could be found for product MS
office. The windows installer cannot continue. I have tried to install
it with another user name but do not have sufficient rights. I am not
sure where/which setting needs to be changed to allow for programs to
run while not an administrator. The user is listed as a power user.

      Any help would be appreciated.

 Thanks

Crash on StartUp

When I first start my computer in the morning it gets close to finished
and then all disk activity stops. The mouse can be moved about and the
cursor may be either an arrow or an hourglass. The bottom tool-bar and
tray is loaded and the desktop icons are showing. The computer does not
respond to Ctrl+Alt+Del and I have to use the reset to restart it. It
then always opens normally. Since the Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work I have
no way of telling which program is not responding. I cannot reproduce
the problem on demand since it generally only occurs when my computer
has been turned off for several hours minimum.

Any ideas on finding out where the trouble is would be greatly
appreciated.

Regards
John Collins
