Accessing /Reading Window Files

It appears I  have a lot of unwanted files in windows 98 which seem have been
been downloaded from chat programmes etc. Would like to delete them but rather
read them first to know what they are. Although word icon appears by their names
wont open in word and extention not txt or .doc What i get is the usual
gobbledegook that makes no sense other than the occasional page break. I do not
recognise the file extentions.

Any help how to read these files would be welcome

Thanks

D Thomas

How to create a IE shortcut that opens a NEW window?

Hi there,

I’ve asked a similar question before, but it wasn’t understood as I
expected…

The stuff is:
Assuming you’ve created a IE shortcut by whatever means, if you launch it
(e.g. by a double click) the page will be loaded in the last IE window
opened (if there is/are one/several).

What I would like to do is to open a NEW IE window every time I launch that
shortcut. Therefore the content of any IE window already opened would not
be altered any more.

Is there a trick to do so?

TIA,
Bignez

Odd Internet activity at WinME startup

I recently installed Norton Internet Security on a fresh WinME setup,
set up to connect via a LAN (I’m on cable).
I noticed that at logon, Windows Explorer (and sometimes mprexe)
initiate UDP communications (port 1900 outgoing, port 1025 incoming).
If I set up the firewall to block these, that results in a bunch
of explorer windows (one for just about each drive letter) to be
popped up at logon.

What is causing this? Is it benign, or should I be worried (well, I
AM worried, since I don’t consider anything M$ does as _benign_).

Oh, and NO, I do not have file/print sharing enabled.

Primary Log-On selection not working on WinME

Since I am the only user for WinME (everyone else using my PC uses
Linux), I’d like to

 a) Disable the ‘Default User’, i.e. disable pressing ‘Cancel’ at
the logon.  However, I’ve forgotten what registry value needs to
    be tweaked to do this.
 b) Use the Family logon, because it looks nicer. However, choosing
the family logon in the network properties has no effect (i.e
the primary logon combo lists ‘Microsoft Family Logon’, but the
standard logon dialog is presented at startup).

All help is appreciated.

Re: Is It Really Time To Kill MS-DOS?

Nice. So how does Microsoft know that I don’t use Windows after I get my money
from them. Or for that matter, that I’m not using it when I ask for my money?

Questions on installing win95 OSR2

Hello all,

I gave up trying to find a way to make my pc-card HP CDRW work with my
laptop’s Windows 95a (the drive’s install diskette says OSR2 is required).
Like me, people in newsgroups were also surprised by HP’s unexpected message
since the common issue regarding 95a would be USB-related. So I finally got
my hands on a Windows install CD, bought it second-hand with registration and
manual from someone who’s moved to Win98. Before committing myself to a never
attempted Windows install adventure, I would appreciate some advice on
questions I have.

1- Is there a way to identify whether it’s OSR2, OSR2.1, or OSR2.5 before
installing the beast (the previous owner couldn’t tell) ? I could see the
files are dated in year 96.

2- Is it possible to install OSR2 from an external zip drive ? My laptop
doesn’t have a CD drive, reason why I bought the HP.

3- Is it possible to install OSR2 without losing the data in my laptop’s
internal disk. I would be VERY afraid to format it because of the risk of
losing files that have already been updated and possibly Compaq’s factory
files.

4- The OSR2 CD is a Portuguese version. Is there a way to make it English
other than later changing regional settings in Control Panel ?

If anyone could help, please e-mail, my news server keeps losing threads.

Augusto

Old Mac floppy's

Hello,

I have some old Mac floppy disks from way back…Is there a program that
will read the files contained within the disks?

I’m not really interested in the hardware involved in the Mac emulators
ROMS and what-not.

I am currently running windows 2000 and 98SE.

Is there a way to get to the old term paper without using a Macintosh?  I
do not even recall the OS version of the Mac I used in the college
library!  It was in 1992.  That is the best I can do.

Thanks,

LaHay

Drive A not ready

My floppy drive works fine from the C:\ prompt but when I try to access it
from Windows98 I  get a message that says "A:\ is not accessible. Device is
not ready." I’ve  gone to Control Panel/System and deleted and reinstalled
the floppy controller. I’ve looked in regedit but I don’t understand it
enough to see a problem if it’s there. Does anyone know where I should look
for the setting that is preventing Windows from accessing the A: drive?

Re: Password Properties – there is no CHANGE button

When you go to Password Properties, there should be a tab called Change
Passwords. Click on that tab, and there will be a button to click to change the
password. Click the button; change the password.
