Re: Please help this poor file-deleting fool

I don’t think you were completely foolish. I think you do need to get rid of
that file. I’ve never seen or heard of it before, but I have good reasoning.

There’s a virus out there (actually it’s a Trojan) called Navidad. My brother
got it, and couldn’t run any executables because the creep who programmed
Navidad made an error in his/her code. What Navidad did is it changed the
registry for .EXE file types. So it would seem that all you would have to is go
into the registry editor and change it back. Problem is, regedit is an .EXE,
which can’t be run. The solution was a .REG file that I downloaded from
F-Secure that told me all about Navidad.

In short, it sounds like this file is the same thing. You could try the Navidad
patch. It’s at http://www.europe.f-secure.com/v-descs/navidad.shtml
I don’t know if it will work or not. But probably worth a try. Once you’ve
downloaded the .REG file, double click on the file. That should change your
registry entry back.

I tried looking up that filename, but found nothing.

The file-deleting fool thanks you

My thanks to everyone who addressed my problem with the trojan.

I was able to run regedit in dos and found the problem entry.

Changing the value to default fixed it.

Again, many thanks.

To correspond with me, change my e-mail address to Rocketmail
instead of Socketmail (anti-spam thing…)

Help!! Puter running like a wet week in a flood!

On Monday I installed an Acer CD ReWriter. Since then my Wi9n98 is running like
a 286 …. although at first it felt like an XT!!!!

I have 132 Ram, 3000 EXT Memory.  I run a Pentium 11, 337 MHz,

I have had a few problems before this, but put that down to needing defraging
etc.  Most times it ran like a baby after defraging etc.

I have check for conflicts …. there are none showin.

I have checked Hard Disk Speed ….  Nothing has changed

I am only using 65% of my RAM

There isn’t enuf go in the machine to load the CD that comes with the CDWRITER.
I did stupidly load up the dos drivers, but too them off again and this did make
a difference.  This is what ACER support suggested.

Oh yes, when I have a CD inthe CDROM it continually loads whatever is there
and it takesforever to find anything on the hard disk  and the mouse acts like
it is drunk (and it is clean and new)

So, I have gone as far as my knowledge can take me and I thought I should put it
to the wider community because ther ehas to be someone out there somewhere who
knows what the hell I am expieriencing here ….. she says while tearing out her
hair.

Shortcut on an URL ???

Hi there,

I would like to know how to create a shortcut on an URL which opens a new
IExplorer window?
If I enter on the command line the following string:
  C:\>explorer http://www.hotmail.com
it will destroy the content of an already opened IExplorer window.
Although, I would like to have it in a NEW window.
That’s the same problem with a .URL shortcut on my Desktop…

Thanks!
Regards,
Bignez

Win2k Chkdsk Errors

hi,

i’m running Chkdsk on my main partition, and this is what i got I’m running
Windows2000 Sp1:

i don’t know what these things about the "Correcting errors in the master
file table’s (MFT) BITMAP attribute." and the "Correcting errors in the
Volume Bitmap.". i’m trying to correct them using Chkdsk /f, and when i
reboot the computer, it says that nothign is wrong. my computer still works
fine with these errors. i think these 2 errors popped up after i did the
following:

- my computer restarted for no reason once in the middle of playing a game,
so that might have triggered the errors.
– installed Nvidia Detonoator Graphic Drivers 6.50
– reinstalled the VIA 4 in 1 drivers 4.25a (installed the AGP driver since i
reinstalled the nvidia drivers).
– installed DirectX 8A
– edited a memory management key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory
Management\DisablePagingExecutive to 1

after doing all this, i decided to run chkdsk again…. and now it says
there are no errors. i reboot, then it says i have those 2 errors again. its
weird… its like on and off. the computer still functions fine, but those
errors are bothering me. anyone know how to fix this? thanks

How to implement Security ?

How to implement security in Windows-95/Windows-98 O.S. I don’t wan’t the
Username/Password screen to take me to my Normal login, after I press
Cancel Button, when the Username/Password Screen is displayed.
i.e; In Windows-NT, after the booting process is over, the Login Screen is
displayed && untill and unless the user types in the Username && Password,
he can’t Login. I wan’t to implement this same security in my System. I
have Windows-98 O.S loaded in my System.

Re: Is It Really Time To Kill MS-DOS?

Sorry to disappoint you, but Shep is partially right. Many, many years ago,
when DOS was created, it was called the disk operating system. It was the
operating system that ran your disk drives. The ROM in your computer knew how
to do everything else, except run the disk drive.

Ken you are right, it does have nothing to do with where it resides, but it is
not just the name that IBM or Microsoft or anyone else gave it.

In some ways, Windows is an operating system, even if it doesn’t use DOS
because Windows tells the computer how to use the disk drives.
