Sorry if this is the wrong place for this, but I’m pretty new to news.
I have a PS2/30 with a 286 and 2 MB of RAM. I have Windows 3.0 and DOS 4.0,
but I haven’t bothered to update Windows or DOS because I doubted if it
was worth it on a 286 machine. A friend of mine suggested I add a few meg
of RAM, and someone else suggested that SMARTDRV on DOS 5.0 would help
speed things up, but I’m very ignorant about hardware. So basically, my
question is, is it worth it? Should I upgrade my software, and is there
anyway I can fiddle with my current system to make it run? Or should I
just wait until I graduate, get a job (hopefully), and eventually become
able to afford a new computer?
Thanks,
Maggie

Well I am using windows3.1 on a 286 (20 mhz) with 4 mb ram. I started about
1 1/2 year ago with a 10 mhz 1mb and windows 3.0. The last confuguration was
no good but when I upgraded to 2 mb of memory is became usable. Then I upgraded
to 20 mhz and 4 mb and I can say that this is a lot faster than most 386sx
(16/20 mhz) that I have seen running windows. My experience with windows 3.1
are mostly positive. However expect no radical speed changes. The filemanager
is a lot faster. But no speed gains for starting windows, screen updates and
the like. Overall version 3.1 "feels" a lot faster because smarter screen updates.
Recommendations:
– update to 3.1
– add 2mb of memory extra
I forgot to tell that printing with windows 3.1 is
2-3 times faster as in 3.0.
Good luck,
Michel
