this is something really urgent so any kind of help will really be
appreciated!
one day, i was installing an app and a game (ms office 2000 and final
fantasy vii) from a state where nothing but win 98 was installed. i was
trying to install a third app (adobe photoshop) and all of a sudden a
dialog box comes up saying "you’ve run out of space on drive c:". i used
my system recovery cd to reformat the hard drive and reinstall win 98.
This time, i only installed winamp and tried to copy a 30-mb movie and it
says that i’ve run out of space again!!! what gives?

Exactly how large is the hard drive itself and the partition to which the apps
and downloads are going? How many files are already present, especially
in the root directory?

the hard drive itself is only 8gb and it hasn’t been partitioned into many
parts; it’s been left as is. in the root, there were only 15 files, which
includes folders as well.
