Hi all,

Before I start, apologies if this is not quite the ideal place to ask,
but I checked on Google without too much success and noticed that
questions on Ranish had been asked previously on this NG.

Anyway, a friend of mine just for the hell of it, it seems, wants to
create a dual boot system for Win98 and WinME. I knew of Ranish
Partition Manager and had a copy on CD and so thought I’d give it a go
for him, but have hit on a problem.

I can create create 2 primary partitions on his single HD using Ranish,
but want to be able to hide the C partition whilst I install one of the
OS’s to D. Problem is, even though I hide the first primary partition
(drive c), and then save MBR, it is drive d that becomes inaccessible
after a reboot. Drive C remains in all its glory. :(

I’ve made the second primary active as well and I’m just stuck as to
what to try next. At the mo’ he’s back to one single OS and perhaps
that’s the way it should stay, but now I’m just pig-headed enough to
want to know how this dual-boot thing is supposed to work, just for my
own sanity. I’ve tried everything in the last week with no joy, but I
won’t be beaten. :)

So, anyone here able to help, or point me in the right direction?

Cheers in advance.
—
Peter Ives
Remove ALL_STRESS only before sending me an email

Hi. First the details:

Toshiba Satellite 1805-S274 laptop
P3 1.1GHZ
256 MB RAM
20 GB HD
16MB video card
Windows XP Home Edition
BIOS 1.9

Basically, for some odd reason I can’t start most of my applications until
the floppy drive seek is finished.
This takes 1 minute after booting up to the Windows XP screen which is not
normal. For example, I open
up Internet Explorer and try to connect to a website. But it won’t connect
until the floppy drive seek is
finished doing its job. I’ve gone to the BIOS setup screen upon Powering up
my computer, hitting the "Esc"
key, the pressing "F1". But there is no option that lets me turn off
floppy drive seek. So what can I do
now? I don’t want to reinstall Windows XP for the 5th time because I now
have some important files
that is just a pain to back up. Thanks.

ClipMate
#######
ClipMate enhances the Windows clipboard, making it a true power
tool. While the cut, copy and paste capability of Windows works well
for transferring single items of data, it is not useful if you want to
move a lot of data or keep data longer than until your next cut or copy.
Windows overwrites the clipboard on its own schedule.

Never lose your clipboard data again! ClipMate works alongside the
regular Windows clipboard and remembers every piece of data (both
text and graphics) that you cut or copy.

I have been given a 3 1/2" floppy to recover data from. Using Windows
Explorer (Win98SE), I get a message that the diskette is not formatted.
TransMac can’t read it either. This disk is known to be good, but was
written by the console of a Japanese printing press. The diskette itself is
a garden variety 1.44MB that was originally preformatted to IBM specs. My
guess is that the preformatting was overwritten. Any advice as to utilities
that I could use to either 1.) try to read the diskette according to "other"
formats or 2.) access the raw info to learn more about what I’ve got?
Never done this before, so all advice appreciated. TIA!!

In Windows 98, I am trying to remove a program that reinstalls itself and
executes itself every time the computer is restarted. The program doesn’t want
me to remove it, and reinstalls itself after every attempt I make to remove it.

All methods of removing the program that I have so far tried have not worked.
The program, which I’ll call "BadProgram.exe", is an advertising program that
installed itself on my computer when I read an email (and probably clicked on
something I shouldn’t have) from a company that doesn’t want me to remove their
advertising. I don’t know the company name or web address, there is just a
link to subscribe to their service. So the program does things unknown to me
to prevent me from being able to easily remove it, and whenever I restart my
computer, the program has a way to reinstall itself and starts itself up again.
Can someone please help me figure out how to actually get rid of it? I have
tried the following:

Remove the file "BadProgram.exe" and all other files in the directory in which
it is found, and the directory itself in which it is found.

Go to Start->Settings->Taskbar & Start Menu, Select the "Start Menu Programs"
tab, Click "Remove", Scroll to "Start Up", find "BadProgram" and remove it.

Manually navigate to C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp, and remove any
file, directory, or link that looks like it is associated with "BadProgram".

Use Find to locate all programs that have "BadProgram" in the name and remove.

Use Find to locate all files of any type, including ".exe" files, that contain
the text "BadProgram" and remove.

None of the above works. The program looks like it is gone, but when I restart
the computer, it reinstalls itself and begins running again.

Obviously, I am no expert on Windows, I am just trying to guess what might work
to remove this nasty program that doesn’t want me to remove it.

Can anyone help me? Am I wrong on how I am trying to remove programs from
being executed on startup? Is there any other kind of automated execution of
programs, either on shutdown, or by timer, or by any other method that could
allow this program to keep reinstalling itself? Thank you for any help.
