is there an utility to shut down Windows when Agent has finished DL?

I turned off my machine for a day, then powered it on.  Reboot hung at the
Win2K 16-color splash screen, about halfway on the progress meter.  Not
aware of any change to cause this.  I had installed Terminal Svcs.,
reapplied SP2 and tested.  Restart was fine before powering off.  So I
restart with Last Known Good Config; reboot and login complete normally.
OK, since that worked, something was wrong in the old
HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet reg. hive (according to Help).  Wonder what
changed?

I find that Control Panel->Power Options no longer shows the Hibernate item
nor offers the Standby option.  No Standby option in Start->ShutDown either.
I have the latest chipset driver and verified the system was installed with
an ACPI HAL, and the BIOS is ACPI.  Term Svcs. and the rest of the system
still seems in order.  All current chipset drivers and BIOS are applied.
Any idea why these power mgmt. options would disappear?  How do I get them
back?  Should I try to bring back the old CurrentControlSet hive?

Shade was a burnt-out console cowboy from Kiwimoto living in a
low-rent domestocube with low-rent neighbours.  Three years earlier
when she was the hottest data-runner on the circuit she’d had a
see-through pink plastic tennis-visor stripped of its towelling band
and implanted into her forehead, but now it was cracking in that dead
white way that cheap plastic goes – that way that everthing goes
outside the Matrix.  Shade was longing for one sensational final job
so she could retire and leave data-smuggling to those fresh punks with
their pointy earlobes.  The doorbell rang.  It was Danny.  Danny had
had a souped-up and heavily re-indexed Chambers biog-chip fitted to
his cerebellum and was the soberest drink-while-you-think name-game
player on Kyoto Island.  Danny brought work for Shade sometimes; most
of the time he just bought fat yellow pills which they would suck
until suddenly their mouths felt all zingy inside.

"Danny has a job, oh yes", said Danny, "but it’s not the normal kind
of job".  "The normal kind of job" meant a consignment of planks of
financial data lifted from a Zaibatsu mainframe and micro-jig-sawn
with some honest three-ply block-board to create a billion
imperceptible dovetails.  Shade specialised in planing strips off the
corporate veneer, weather-proofing them, and gluing them back on
again, although sometimes she would unplug herself from her Black and
Decker console wondering exactly what was said on her tin.  "What kind
of job is it, Danny?"  Danny showed her a blue disk about the size of
an Akiwa-Yahama.  On it were the words "Oxford University Press" and
"Dictionary of National Biography".  "This one’s for me, Shade", said
Danny.

Shade knew how to run it – she’d been shown these things before.
Twentieth-century hard data-storage, accessed on things called PCs.
She knew a place where she could get one, but the program that drove
it was securely stored in a government data-safe on the Matrix, like a
disease culture in a germ-warfare lab.  Practiced hands switched on
and jacked in …

… and she was part of the Matrix; a speck of light in an infinite
grid of glowing, shifting, swarming data.  Around her were the
corporate hubs she knew so well, and their couruscating, spiralling
spokes where multi-billion dollar beads clack back and forth.  Soon
she was on the edge of the government sectors, groping for a gap,
touching lightly here and there, feeling …

… and she was in; a special clearance datum flashing ahead of her.
Heading straight for the archive, she quickly found the data-safes for
dangerous sofware, and the security systems were no match for her
skills, practised at evading the much better, much more fatal,
protection mechanisms of the giant criminal corporations.  She swooped
on the location indexed under "Windows" and opened it up.

I’ve been using MailWasher. It will read your email from your POP mailbox. Any
email from senders on your blacklist will automatically be bounced and deleted.
You can also set up filters to determine what gets bounced and deleted. It will
then show a list of remaining email still on the server, where you can choose
to accept, bounce, and/or delete the message.

After processing all the email, the email program of your choice will launch
(so you can keep using Eudora), and you can retrieve your mail as per normal,
except now there won’t be any spam in it.

When a message is bounced, it sends out a bounce message that looks identical
to one your ISP would send to say you don’t exist. I don’t think it’s very
effective, as many spammers don’t use real addresses, or if they do, they don’t
pay attention to bounce messages. But hey, why not send it anyway. Of course
that is an option, and you don’t have to send the message anyway.

The password thing should work with whatever program you use, as long as you
don’t tell it to remember your pop server password.

Hi, lately the icons for different file types has been getting really
screwy on my computer.  For example, I have a .psd (Photoshop) drawing
but when I look at the file the icon is for hyperterminal, and for
text documents, it has been everything from a printer icon, to a
winamp icon.  I am not sure what to make of this, I have gone and
changed the icons under file associations way too many times and don’t
think it is doing any good anyway.  What part of windows would be
doing this? How might one go about fixing this (apart from
reinstalling or formatting the hard drive).  Any help would be greatly
appreciated!

Hi, I was recently thinking about how the "windows key" is wasted (or
seems to be), and wanted to make some hot keys using it (since I am
running out of hot keys using shift, alt, & ctl) but when I go to the
properties section of a icon and try to set up a shortcut key I get
nothing.  Can this be done?  Any help or perhaps a point in the right
direction would be *greatly* appreciated.

How do you stop the BIOS from caching and shadowing ?
Just had an error message telling me to stop it from doing them.

Also then the computer will reboot its self. Then run the
XP scan disk thing, and it then truncates files. The files
it truncates are normally in OE our the Temp Internet folder,
sometimes also in "minidump" ?

Any advice most welcome ( BTW: I am an average computer user
so please no complicated technical jargon )

This is driving me nuts. One day my cd rom and writer worked and the
next day they wouldn’t. Anytime I put a cd-rom in and double click or
explore the drive from anywhere on the computer I get a "please insert
disk into drive" (or similar message). I found out when I went to play
a game and it asked me to insert the disk when it was already in the
drive. I’ve replaced the  IDE cable … I’ve uninstalled both and
windows (XP home) redetects and installs both at reboot. There’s no
error indicators in device manager. They both open and close and
lights go on but I don’t hear any indication of spinning. I’ve tried
many cd’s so it’s not a faulty cd and I doubt both drives suddenly
break down at the same time. I’ve searched for days on google groups
and have found many poeople who had a similar experience but I haven’t
really seen any post with a solution

Does anyone have a solution or know of a place online which might.
