Prob with Sound Recorder and Help files

 Hi –

I’ve got a couple of probs I’m hoping someone might be able to help me
with.

1. I am trying to try out my microphone with my PC – running Win98 –
however – when I open the sound recorder – the one that came with Win98
– I get the message saying that another program is recording audio – and
to stop that and try again.   did a contol-alt-delete and shut down
DirectCd which I saw was running – though I was not using it.  But that
made no difference.  I then tried to use the help in the sound recording
program.  Which brings me to

2. The help file would not come up. I then tried just the regular
windows help via the start menu – and of course, that wouldn’t work
either. I then tried to find the help file(s).

I found all the individual .hlp files under windows/help – but clicking
on any produces a message: "This file is not meant for browsing.
This file is not meant for browsing. It contains help and error
messages."

I’m not sure whether I have ever used the mike with this computer.  I
know I did use it on my previous one.

What I am trying to do is try out Yahoo Messenger and see how their PC
–> telephone works.  I’ve even now uninstalled that to see if that
might have been interfering with the sound recording…but that had no
effect…

Any ideas on how to be able to use the sound recorder – and also get
back ability to use helpfiles??  (Hoping any solution does not involve
reinstalling windows, as I’m rather wary of that…)
