My computer hangs up about 50% of the time on the graphic "Please wait
while Windows 98 shuts down". I either have to hit the reset button or
unplug and take the battery out. I can not Cntl Alt Del out. I don’t
have any open programs running at shutdown (other than what be running in
the background).
I would appreciate any help that you might be able to give. Thanks in
advance for your help.

This sure looks like a graphics card problem. I bet it doesnt give any error
prompt, just hanging? Try getting the latest driver for your card. Run
scandisk and set it to auto fix errors. Dont forget defrag. This trivial
things can help you in the long run

Is it a Win 98 or Win 98 SE?, Win 98 SE has a lot of problems when shutdown.
Look at Microsoft webpage for more information.
You can go there:

I think it will help you.

THe first thing I would do, in either Win98 or Win98Se is:
Click on your start button
Click RUN
type MSCONFIG in the command line, click OK.
Go to the Startup tab. Uncheck ALL items.
CLick Apply, then OK. Go ahead and reboot.
If the hanging stops, then you have a resource/memory problem. Start
checking boxes in the System Configuration Utility to find out what
combination works.
